Music Ministry at Holy Family
The music ministry at Holy Family Inclusive Catholic Community provides opportunity for people with music talents to participate in celebrating mass in several ways:
  • Cantor
  • Pianist
  • Guitarist
  • Electric Bass
  • Choir member
  • Percussionist
  • Instrumentalist (flute, oboe, saxophone, etc.)

Our regular Saturday music group consists of a cantor, pianist, and guitarists.  Other singers occasionally join us when they are available.

Our choir sings for special occasions including Christmas Eve, the Great Vigil, and Pentecost.

We use the 1970 Proper of the Mass.  It is our belief that this translation of the Mass meets people where they are in their faith journey more than the new translations used in the Roman Catholic church.

Most of the music we include in the Mass is exactly like you would find in most Roman Catholic parishes.  We also include music from the modern Contemporary Christian genre.  The music is carefully chosen to fall within our mission of providing an environment rich in inclusion and social justice.

Our Music Director
John Steckel comes to us from Jacksonville, Illinois.  He is a graduate of Greenfield High School in Greenfield, Illinois, and Quincy University in Quincy, Illinois.  He has served as a church music director since 1987 having served congregations in the Presbyterian Church USA, Missouri Synod Lutheran, Roman Catholic, United Methodist, United Church of Christ, and Disciples of Christ traditions.  He serves as our primary cantor and assistant pianist.  He also currently serves the congregation of Davis Memorial Christian Church in Taylorville, Illinois as their chancel choir director.

John is also the composer of Mass of the Holy Family, which is used frequently in our liturgy.

Mass of the Holy Family
We are honored to have an original mass setting to call our own. The composition of Mass of the Holy Family was begun in 1985, long before the existence of our community.  The first parts composed were the Holy, Memorial Acclamation, and The Great Amen.  The full composition was then placed on hold until 2016, when the Gloria, Gospel Acclamation, Prayers of the People, and Lamb of God were added.  Since it was introduced on Pentecost Sunday in 2016, two additional memorial acclamations and the Doxology have been added.

This composition was composed to provide a joyful and contemporary feel to the celebration of the Mass.  The central melody reoccurs in the Gloria, Holy, Memorial Acclamations A and B, and Doxology/Great Amen.  Complimentary melodies occur in the other mass parts.

Holy Family Inclusive Catholic Community is a faith community in central Illinois
that exists within the Roman Catholic tradition and is inclusive of all people.
